- NEXT PLANS FOR 68040 WORKSTATION
-
-
- NeXT, Inc. announced plans for a 25-MHz '040-based version of its computer,
- which sources say will deliver 20 MIPS performance. The price of the new
- machine is currently unknown, however, current customers can upgrade to the
- 68040 for $1,495 (retail). Availability will not be until Q4 1990, however,
- dealers will be taking orders in June.
-
- With Motorola charging $795/each for sample quantities of the 25-MHz 68040,
- NeXT's upgrade price of $1,495 is very aggressive. NeXT's cost to upgrade is
- significantly less than other vendors.
-
- NeXT must still face other problems with its computers and make good on some
- promises: there are very few applications and fewer expansion cards; a floppy
- disk drive (or other inexpensive removable-media device) is still conspicuously
- missing from the plans; and the retail price tag is more than most are willing
- to pay. Previous mention of a graphics coprocessor and color capability also
- have yet to bear fruit.
-
- This new machine is not an unexpected move for NeXT--the '040 is a natural,
- albeit much needed, evolution of the product. Though increasing performance
- removes an objection to buying this box, it still suffers from other
- inadequacies. Regardless of the significance of these problems, there are few
- compelling reason for customers to migrate to the NeXT platform.
